President Obama Addresses the National Urban League on Education (live stream)

Pres. Obama is addressing the National Urban League at their Centennial Conference live on whitehouse.gov.

He is expected to address recent criticism by the Urban League and other civil rights groups on his education reform initiatives.

Transforming the High School Experience: How New York City’s New Small Schools Are Boosting Studen

Since 2002, New York City has closed more than 20 underperforming public high schools, opened more than 200 new secondary schools, and introduced a centralized high school admissions process in which approximately 80,000 students a year indicate their school preferences from a wide-ranging choice of programs. At the heart of these reforms lie 123 new “small schools of choice” (SSCs) — small, academically nonselective, four-year public high schools for students in grades 9 through 12. Open to students at all levels of academic achievement and located in historically disadvantaged communities, SSCs were intended to be viable alternatives to the neighborhood high schools that were closing.

Divided Democrats: The Two Narratives of School Reform

There are two competing narratives of school reform within the Democratic Party today: one based on equity (of school resources) and another focused on accountability (for school results). (These different narratives are largely captured in the platforms of the "Broader, Bolder Approach to Education" and the "Education Equality Project," respectively.) The first narrative sees public schools as generally well-performing and attributes poor student performance to the effects of poverty. The second narrative of school reform sees the status quo in American education as untenable, and believes that it is unlikely to change absent strong reform pressure from Washington that holds states and schools accountable for improving student performance.
